Diaz-Balart: I’m Profoundly Saddened by the Death of Armando Sosa Fortuny

Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. –– Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (FL-25) issued the following statement regarding the death of patriot and political prisoner, Armando Sosa Fortuny.

“I am profoundly saddened by the death of courageous political prisoner Armando Sosa Fortuny, who died last night. Sosa Fortuny spent more than 40 years imprisoned in Cuba and received severely inadequate treatment for his grave ailments while in prison. I am outraged that the regime in Cuba continues its inhumane treatment of political prisoners such as Sosa Fortuny. The regime in Cuba continues to repress the Cuban people, and aids in the repression of the Venezuelan people as well. Renowned UNPACU activists, including leader Jose Daniel Ferrer, remain imprisoned for the “crime” of daring to express opposition to the regime.

“I commend the Trump administration for continuing to impose tough sanctions against the brutal regime in Cuba and urge the administration to continue to apply effectual pressure until all political prisoners are released, rights to expression, association, political parties, and independent media are recognized, and free, fair, multiparty elections are scheduled.

“Over the past few days, the cause of democracy and freedom has lost two great champions, as we also mourn the loss of Arturo Cobo–– a Bay of Pigs veteran and democracy activist who devoted his life to fighting for Cuba’s freedom.”
