Diaz-Balart Statement on the Equality Act
Feb 26, 2021
WASHINGTON, D.C. –– Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (FL-25) issued the following statement regarding H.R. 5, the "Equality Act."
“I have always fought against discrimination in all its forms, which is why I voted for this bill last Congress and outlined some severe flaws that needed to be addressed to obtain bipartisan support. House Democratic Leadership had ample time to make these changes, but sadly, they ignored multiple good faith efforts by my colleagues and instead doubled down on some of the most troubling issues, including sabotaging religious freedom. Despite its name and promise to eliminate discrimination, what the bill actually does is discriminate against mosques, churches, and religious organizations for their deeply held religious beliefs.
“Once again, if House Leadership wanted to pass real, meaningful legislation to fight discrimination and protect the American people, they would have included bipartisan language providing legitimate protections for families, individuals, medical professionals, and religious organizations. I have and will always proudly stand against any and all forms of discrimination and bigotry, which is why Rep. Chris Stewart, my colleagues, and I will be introducing the “Fairness for All Act,” a bill that protects both the LGBT community and religious organizations from being discriminated against.”
