Diaz-Balart: This Bill Actually Has Nothing to do with Protecting Individuals with Pre-Existing Conditions

Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. ––Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (FL-25) issued the following statement after Democratic leadership brought forth H.R. 986, “Protecting Americans with Preexisting Conditions Act.”

“Despite its feel-good, buzzworthy title, nothing in this bill would protect individuals with pre-existing conditions. Instead, it’s designed to eliminate health care choices for states, and stops the Administration from granting waivers that could reduce premiums and out-of-pocket costs, increase access, and provide more affordable coverage.”

“As CMS Administrator Seema Verma confirmed, under current guidance, Americans with pre-existing conditions are protected. In fact, at the start of the 116th Congress, House Republicans called for a vote to lock protections for these individuals but were blocked by Democrats. Further, I co-sponsored a bill that would explicitly protect individuals with pre-existing conditions, but House Democrats have refused to consider it.”

“I will continue to fight to create real and bipartisan solutions that will improve healthcare accessibility for the American people and protect those with pre-existing conditions.”
