Diaz-Balart Commemorates the 118th Anniversary of Cuban Independence Day

May 20, 2020

MIAMI, FL – Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (FL-25) issued the following statement on the 118th anniversary of Cuban Independence Day.

"Today, we mark the 118th anniversary of the birth of the Republic of Cuba. Tragically, less than 60 years after its birth, the Republic collapsed at the hands of the Castro tyranny.

"As we work toward the day when the Cuban people are finally rid of the brutal dictatorship that has tortured, murdered, and oppressed for decades, we honor the bravery of those who continue to demand freedom, the release of all political prisoners, democracy, and respect for basic human rights. A few days ago, I interviewed courageous independent journalist and pro-democracy activist Jose Daniel Ferrer, who has endured imprisonment, harassment, and abuse for daring to speak against human rights abuses in Cuba. Due to the courage and sacrifice of freedom fighters like Ferrer and countless others, the Cuban people will win their freedom once again."
