Díaz-Balart Joins Chairman Womack and Ranking Member Quigley for a District Visit of Key Transportation and Housing Areas in Florida's 26th Congressional District

June 7, 2024

MIAMI, FL – This week, Rep. Mario Díaz-Balart (R-FL-26), a senior member of the House Committee on Appropriations and former Chairman and Ranking Member of the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD) Subcommittee of the House Committee on Appropriations, joined Chairman Steve Womack (R-AR-3) and Ranking Member Mike Quigley (D-IL-5), of the THUD Subcommittee, on tours of Miami International Airport, Brightline Miami Central Station, and the Hialeah Public Housing Authority.

The trip provided an opportunity to share the impact and significance of THUD federal appropriations and a unique insight into the results of Chairman Womack and Ranking Member Quigley's work within the THUD subcommittee on Florida's 26th Congressional District. Specifically, it highlighted how funding for Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Department of Transportation, allocated through the appropriations process, have strengthened public housing programs, enhanced innovative public transportation systems, and protected sensitive U.S. government facilities.

"Great having Chairman Womack and Ranking Member Quigley tour key transportation and housing areas in southern Florida. I'm proud to have a proven track record of delivering for my district to fund critical housing and infrastructure programs all while reducing wasteful spending. I thank Chairman Womack and Ranking Member Quigley for their leadership and I look forward to continuing to work with them to advance the critical needs in my district and across the country," said Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart.

“Getting a firsthand look at the vital infrastructure, transportation and housing needs, and associated projects throughout our country is critical as we prepare the FY25 THUD bill. Our work impacts the safety, economic opportunity, and quality of life of every American, from Miami to Arkansas and beyond. I appreciate my dear friend Mr. Diaz-Balart for showing us how impactful federal investment is for communities across his district,” said Congressman Steve Womack.

“During my years on the THUD Subcommittee I have not often had the opportunity to see our federal investments coming to life outside my own district. This trip reaffirmed the incredible impact that funding for housing and transportation have across the entire nation. My visit to Miami’s Brightline station provided a glimpse into the possible future of transportation in the United States and will strongly inform my work on the Subcommittee moving forward," said Congressman Mike Quigley. "High speed rail holds massive potential for the entire nation and in Chicago specifically, which already has one of the strongest public transit systems in the country, we have the possibility of connecting millions of people across the Midwest. From the tour of Miami Airport to the trip to Brightline’s station and the visit to Hialeah, each stop in my visit provided important insight for our work on the THUD Subcommittee and lessons for how to replicate these powerful investments across the United States.”

Miami International Airport

MIA

Miami International Airport (MIA) is the leading economic engine for Miami-Dade County and the State of Florida. It is America's busiest airport for international freight and the second busiest for international passengers, offering more flights to Latin America and the Caribbean than any other U.S. airport.

That is why during the meeting with MIA officials, Congressman Díaz-Balart stressed the importance of airport security. He mentioned how the Homeland Security funding bill for fiscal year 2025 includes strong prohibitions that he requested to ensure that no taxpayer money is used to allow individuals working for a country designated as a State Sponsor of Terrorism to have access to sensitive U.S. government facilities like MIA.

With Miami being one of the host cities for the FIFA World Cup 2026, the Congressman also highlighted that he and his colleagues sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security asking what preparations were underway to increase security planning and other logistical support for the World Cup, especially since the President's fiscal year 2025 budget request did not include adequate funding for increased security.

Since the inception of Brightline in South Florida, Congressman Díaz-Balart has witnessed the monumental transformation it has brought to Floridians and the economy as the only privately owned and operated intercity railroad in the United States. Brightline's recent expansion to the Orlando area, connecting Miami to Orlando, has provided a path for Floridians and tourists to travel across the state through the rail system. It has already welcomed over five million passengers abroad since opening its doors in 2017.

Hialeah Public Housing Authority

The Hialeah Housing Authority (HHA) was created in 1967 to provide vulnerable citizens of Hialeah with affordable and quality housing. The HHA services over 5,000 Section 8 vouchers, 1, 117 Public Housing units, and 545 Affordable Housing units. Recently, it was awarded the third highest in funding in the State of Florida, The funding awarded to Hialeah Housing Authority is provided through HUD's Capital Fund Program, which offers annual funding to all public housing authorities to build, renovate, and/or modernize the public housing in their communities. Its Executive Director Julio Ponce and City of Hialeah Mayor Esteban Bovo have been instrumental in its success.

Díaz-Balart Continues to Deliver for South Florida

Congressman Díaz-Balart has a proven track record of reducing spending without shortchanging critical investments. During his years as former Chairman and Ranking Member of the THUD Subcommittee, he secured millions of dollars in federal funding to South Florida to support our veterans, the elderly, the disabled, and other vulnerable populations. He has also worked diligently to maintain and upgrade our country's roadways, seaports, transit systems, and airports and has been successful in bringing these investments into the South Florida community.

Other successful solutions for the community include the PRICE Program. As Ranking Member, Congressman Díaz-Balart worked with then-THUD Chairman David Price to create the Preservation and Reinvestment Initiative for Community Enhancement "PRICE" program. Manufactured housing is a critical piece of the country's affordable housing stock that provides a home to over 22 million Americans. Manufactured housing and manufactured housing communities face significant challenges to affordability, resilience, infrastructure, and maintenance. The PRICE program is intended to replace the manufactured housing that can no longer withstand extreme weather, natural hazards, and disaster events with critical and necessary affordable workforce housing that will provide community enhancement for many generations to come.
