Disaster Tax Relief Bill Passes the Senate

December 6, 2024
WASHINGTON, D.C.– Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart (FL-26) issued the following statement after the U.S. Senate passed H.R. 5863, the Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act of 2023:

"The Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act of 2023 (H.R. 5863), which I proudly cosponsored and voted in favor of on May 22, 2024, passed the Senate earlier this week.

The crucial piece of legislation aims to provide tax assistance to those who have been affected by Hurricanes Ian and subsequent storms Idalia, Nicole, Fiona, Debby, Helene, and Milton–storms that devasted Florida and irreparably altered the lives of thousands of Floridians. Many Floridians are still struggling to recover from the financial toll of these disasters. H.R. 5863 addresses this need by removing the minimum loss threshold to qualify for tax write-offs and the requirement for itemizing deductions.

Having witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of these hurricanes in Southwest Florida, I am proud to have been the first Member of Congress off the committee of jurisdiction to sponsor this bill. Now, the next step is for President Biden to sign this important legislation into law.

While I am pleased to have helped advance H.R. 5863, I know there is more work ahead. As we prepare for the 119th Congress, I remain committed to advocating for the priorities of Florida's 26th district and advancing legislation that provides meaningful support for our communities."
