Ferrer fue encarcelado durante la famosa "Primavera Negra" de 2003, y con valentía ha seguido abogando por los derechos humanos y la libertad del pueblo cubano.

Representatives Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL-25), Albio Sires (D-NJ-13), Michael McCaul (R-TX-10), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL-23), Francis Rooney (R-FL-19), and Chris Smith (R-NJ-4) introduced a bipartisan resolution demanding the immediate release of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU) leader Jose Daniel Ferrer, and all other political prisoners in Cuba. Ferrer was imprisoned during the notorious “Black Spring” of 2003 and courageously has continued to advocate for human rights and freedom for the Cuban people.
